Discount Deck: Alolan Exeggutor/Smeargle

(g) Tropical Shake 20+

This attack does 20 more damage for each type of basic Energy card in your discard pile. You can’t add more than 100 damage in this way.

So here’s a fun deck idea that has performed well. If you remember my Ho-Oh EX deck from my YouTube days, there’s a joy to make a deck with lots of different types of energy. While Alolan Exeggutor is reminiscent of that deck, it lacks Ho-Oh’s strong attack, most of the time you’ll be hitting for 80-120 damage. However unlike that fiery bird, “AEggs” has 160 HP and only 1 prize when knocked out. You’ll find your opponent struggling to KO your pokemon, and when they do it only nets 1 prize card. Additionally your attacker will get stronger as the game goes on, because more energy will be entering the discard, to the point where you’re consistently hitting for 120.

When you’re constructing an Alolan Exeggutor deck, because you’re using many types of energy, you have some options with regards to which pokemon to put alongside your main theme. I went with Garbodor and Zoroark-GX. The latter should be obvious. Not only do you get draw with Zoroark, but discard as well. Remember for Exeggutor’s attack to be fully powered you need 5 different energy in the discard pile. There are actually 6 different types in the deck, to help speed things along. Additionally you can power “Z” with dark energy, to mirror an opponent’s attack.

As for Garbodor, I liked the idea of an attacker that needs just one energy. While all the attackers are stage 1 – which slows things down, you only need 1 energy per attacker, with the exception of Zoroark-GX. Garbodor’s attack strength may vary not only from game to game but as a game progresses. However his presence serves a purpose in preventing your opponent from playing their item cards, or playing them with penalty by the late game.

As any good chef knows, to make a good meatball you need a binding agent. For this deck it’s Smeargle. While you can play AEggs without him, he makes it much easier to both find the right energy on the right pokemon AND get the proper energies in the discard pile. So you can put the wrong energy on your Exeggutor, and then use Smeargle to put that energy in discard for a grass energy!

Ability Second Coat

Once during your turn (before your attack), you may switch a basic Energy card attached to your Active Pokémon with a different type of basic Energy card from your discard pile.

In any case, this is an interesting card to be sure. I’m guessing there are a lot of different decks that can be made with Alolan Exeggutor, and I’d like to see what ideas other people come up with.
